Grandma's Cranberry Sauce
Total time: ~15 minutes
Yield: 2 1/4 cups
Ingredients:
1 cup sugar
1 cup water
4 cups (1 12-oz package) fresh or frozen cranberries
Optional: pecans, orange zest, lemon zest, raisins, currants, blueberries, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice)
Instructions:
1. Wash and pick out any bad cranberries. In a saucepan, bring the water and sugar to boil, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Add cranberries, return to boil. Reduce heat, simmer for 10 minutes or until cranberries burst.
2. At this point add optional ingredients.
3. Remove from heat. Cool completely at room temperature and then chill in the refrigerator if making ahead. Cranberry sauce thickens more as it cools.

Notes: Grandma typically mixed in a half cup roughly chopped pecans and a few strips of orange zest. I like to add lemon zest and a few sprinkles of cinnamon, and a tiny bit of nutmeg and allspice.
